World’s Largest Life Cycle Model for a Paper Machine

Ecobio modeled the environmental impacts of a paper machine over the entire life cycle of the machine. The modeled paper machine was Valmet’s Metsärauma Oy’s paper machine Rauma 4.

A paper machine is one of the largest products in the industrial manufacturing sector, consisting of thousands of components. The main stages of the life cycle of a paper machine are the initial production of materials, the manufacture of materials, the manufacture of parts, the assembly of the machine, the use and maintenance of the paper machine, and scrapping. During its use, the paper machine consumes water and energy. The drafting of a complex model was a very extensive and challenging task, which Ecobio carried out according to plans and on schedule. The work was done according to the guidelines of the ISO 14040 standard series. A third party verified the calculation results.

The life cycle modeling was carried out as a joint project, which was participated by the paper machine manufacturer Valmet Oyj, the wire manufacturer Tamfelt Oyj, the paper manufacturer UPM Kymmene Oyj, and the chemical manufacturer Kemira Oyj. In addition to the companies, the Technology Development Center funded the project.
