Large Carnivore Survey
A large carnivore survey supports responsible land use planning and construction, both within and outside the reindeer herding area. We provide site specific surveys covering all large carnivores together, including wolverine, lynx, bear, and wolf, or focusing on a single species. When is a large carnivore survey needed?
A large carnivore survey may be required in the following situations:
- land use planning or zoning changes
- wind and solar power projects
- as part of an environmental impact assessment process
- when previous observations of large carnivores or their movement routes are known in the area
Large carnivores in Finland
Four terrestrial large carnivores occur in Finland:
- Wolf (Canis lupus): critically endangered, listed in Annex V of the EU Habitats Directive in Finland.
- Wolverine (Gulo gulo): critically endangered, listed in Annex II of the Habitats Directive.
- Bear* (Ursus arctos): near threatened, listed in Annex IV of the Habitats Directive in Finland.
- Lynx* (Lynx lynx): least concern, listed in Annex IV of the Habitats Directive in Finland.
* Destruction or deterioration of breeding and resting sites is prohibited under the Nature Conservation Act.
Large carnivores occupy the top level of the food chain and regulate populations of their natural prey, such as moose, deer, and hares, with effects across the surrounding ecosystem. Extensive home ranges, a need for remote habitats, and avoidance of human activity are common characteristics of all large carnivore species.
When is a large carnivore survey carried out?
Tracks of large carnivores, with the exception of the bear, are most effectively observed during snowy conditions from January to March. Den sites are searched for during snow free periods after the breeding season, starting from July and August. Desk based assessment and the use of wildlife cameras can be carried out throughout the year.
How is a large carnivore survey conducted?
The scope of methods depends on client needs and the characteristics of the site. The steps outlined below provide a comprehensive understanding of how large carnivores use the survey area.
- Collection of baseline information: We review existing material, including local knowledge, carnivore observations, maps, and authority data.
- Fieldwork: We search for tracks, droppings, movement routes, and identify potential denning areas.
- Analysis and impact assessment: We assess the importance of the area for the viability of the species and examine potential impacts of the project on large carnivore behaviour and safety
- Reporting and recommendations: We prepare a report that meets authority requirements and includes:
- species specific observations
- maps and analyses
- risk and impact assessments
- recommendations for impact mitigation and for aligning the project with nature
