What is a Natura Assessment and when is it required?

Natura 2000 sites safeguard species and habitats considered important at the European level. A Natura Assessment must be carried out in accordance with Section 35 of the Nature Conservation Act (9/2023) when a project or plan may significantly impair the species, habitats or natural state that form the basis for the protection of a Natura 2000 area.

When Natura Assessment has to be done?

The obligation to conduct a Natura Assessment applies to situations such as:

  • construction projects and land use planning near a Natura site
  • road, rail and wind power projects
  • water management projects including drainage or dredging
  • other projects that may affect the conservation values of a Natura site

An authority may require a Natura Assessment or a preliminary evaluation of its necessity as part of a permitting process.
